Soil & Groundwater Monitoring

Pollutech has successfully conducted Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) at various facilities and properties throughout Ontario. Some examples of Pollutech's experience are shown below:

Example 1: The general objective of these Phase II ESAs was to investigate the soil and groundwater conditions at the facility, in the area of a Trichloroethylene (TCE) Above Ground Storage Tank (AST). These investigations included, but are not limited to the following:

Soil vapour survey in the vicinity of the former TCE AST location to investigate the potential TCE impact on the subsurface material below the concrete slab. Elevated Total Organic Vapour (TOV) concentrations were detected in most test holes drilled close to the former TCE AST location.
Soil and groundwater investigation, including borehole drilling, soil sampling, monitoring well installation, analytical testing, groundwater sampling, interpretation of groundwater and flow, analytical testing of soil and groundwater samples, data analysis and interpretation of contaminants plume in groundwater. The analytical testing results were compared against the 1996 (1998 revisions) Ministry of the Environment (MOE) Table B Soil Criteria for commercial/industrial use.
Ongoing groundwater monitoring to investigate the potential off-site migration of the contaminants and to verify the progress of the remediation work.

Example 2: The general objective of this investigation was to determine arsenic concentrations in the soil and groundwater at numerous hydro stations across Ontario. These investigations included, but are not limited to:

Shallow soil sampling and testing.
Deep soil sampling and testing, by advancing boreholes.
Groundwater sampling and testing by installing monitoring wells.
Interpretation of groundwater flow.
On-going groundwater monitoring and testing.

Example 3: A series of pipeline ruptures at a chemical manufacturing facility in Sarnia, Ontario resulted in a spill of over one million litres of benzene. Pollutech responded to the emergency and implemented a series of Phase II ESAs. These investigations included, but were not limited to:

Shallow soil vapour survey at four different sites affected by the benzene spill. This shallow soil vapour survey was to roughly delineate the lateral extent of the soil impact.
Test Pit investigation, including soil and groundwater sampling and testing.
Borehole investigation, including soil and groundwater sampling and testing.
Interpretation of groundwater flow direction and contaminants plume.
Ongoing groundwater monitoring and testing.
