Pollutech EnviroQuatics Limited has been providing zebra mussel investigative and control services since 1989. Pollutech can design and implement a complete monitoring program to meet the needs of your company or assist your with the development of an appropriate control technology. Some of the highlights of our proven success are as follows: Veliger Monitoring- determining the onset of zebra mussel production
- determining densities and seasonal trends in population dynamics
- estimating growth rates
- determining periods of zebra mussel settling
Adult MusselsPollutech EnviroQuatics has had proven success with their "biobox" design as an effective monitor of settled forms. - Bioboxes and substrates are used to determine the presence of settled forms
- Sites are strategically chosen to monitor intakes and "on-site" locations
Treatment EffectivenessIf control systems are in place it is critical to know if they are adequate and effective for zebra mussel control. Procedures have been developed for measuring the efficacy of the implemented control measure in preventing the settlement of veligers and the elimination of adults. Successful procedures include: - Designing and measuring percent kills
- In-situ bioassays have been designed that are very effective in evaluating the success of intermittent and continuous chlorination procedures
Associated Zebra Mussel Control Services- Pollutech EnviroQuatics has experienced biologists on staff who are adept and efficient in monitoring protocols, and experienced in the identification of veligers.
- Pollutech is capable of interpreting current Ministry of the Environment "Guidelines on Applying for the Approval of Water and Sewage Works to Deal with Zebra Mussel Control" and providing support in applying for a Certificate of Approval for the use of chlorine.
- Pollutech has experience with the efficacy of intermittent and continuous chlorination systems. We are capable of recommending appropriate measures and an implementation schedule for the cost effective control of zebra mussels.
- Pollutech has extensive experience in the biological monitoring of benthic invertebrate communities. Current and amended Certificate of Approvals for the use of chlorine require detailed studies to assess the environmental impacts in the vicinity of the discharge location, before and after the chlorination period. These comprehensive studies require highly skilled personnel for the accurate taxonomic analysis, complex data interpretation and detailed statistical analysis.
- Pollutech has evaluated other technologies for controlling zebra mussel veligers including the use of ultrasonics.
Other Zebra Mussel Services:- Underwater Inspection
- Investigating Drinking Water Taste and Odour Problems
- Determination of Process Parameters for Chlorination/Dechlorination Control Programs
- Research Studies (ex. Control Options and/or Evaluations)
The technical team at Pollutech is available to provide you with a complete solution to your zebra mussel control program, as demonstrated by a number of studies completed in the laboratory or at field installations. In addition, Pollutech has been contracted by the Canadian Coast Guard to provide expertise on the control of exotic organisms, like the zebra mussel, entering Canada via shipboard ballast waters. These studies have been peer reviewed by the United States and Australian Coast Guard.
