General Marine Services
In 1980, Pollutech Environmental Limited was granted recognition as a testing establishment for the purposes of carrying out tests as specified in the "Great Lakes Sewage Pollution Prevention Regulations". In general, this involves the observation or completion of complex and specific tests for the regulation of marine sanitary treatment systems.

Staff from Pollutech have been involved in Marine testing since 1975 involving work at on- shore test facilities, on-board tests for installed systems, and observations of tests carried out overseas. Any ship traveling on the Great Lakes must have a recognized marine treatment facility. Pollutech will set up and execute such tests, or provide observation of tests to the standards set by the Canadian Coast Guard.

Typical marine testing projects:

  • shipboard holding systems;
  • biological processes with activated carbon;
  • conventional biological processes;
  • chlorination/maceration systems; and
  • UV or UV/ozonation processes
Pollutech's role is to arrange for the set-up and testing of the system to be approved either at our testing laboratories, on-board an operating ship, or at the client's test facilities. We have attended at test facilities in Hamburg, Germany, for the evaluation of European technology as it relates to Canadian Coast Guard standards.

For further information on the Canadian Great Lakes, visit the GLPPC (Great Lakes Pollution Prevention Center). Requirements specified by the IMO (International Maritime Organization) are available on the Internet.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF PROJECTS RELATING TO THE GREAT LAKES TESTING FACILITY

  • On-site evaluation of a MSD (Marine Sanitation Device) in Hamburg Germany for compliance with Canadian regulations for sanitation systems used on the Great Lakes.
  • Investigation of alternative means to control the entry of unwanted organisms into the Canadian Great Lakes through management and control of ballast water exchange programs.
  • Development of technical support documents for Department of National Defence tender documents for MSDs on Canadian warships.
  • On-site testing of operating MSDs on freighters operating in the Great Lakes as part of the Environment Canada and Canadian Coast Guard routine monitoring projects in Ontario and Quebec.
  • Evaluation of alternative disinfection technologies for MSDs to ensure compliance with the Great Lake’s chlorination limits, including an evaluation of monitoring equipment.
